I think the Keystone is meant to primarily serve PA residents to PhillyIf so, then why run it to Manhattan? It ought to run into Suburban Station and end there. Allentown may best be served by extending the ex-CNJ from Phillipsburg or the ex-Reading from Philly by NJT or SEPTA The current state of the former CNJ between Easton and Bethlehem keeps disimproving. The ROW's already got at least one building on it (a CREA halfway house in Freemansburg) and a new "grade crossing" was built to bypass a railroad bridge on Freemansburg Avenue. The old bridge from the Allentown Terminal Railroad into Allentown's downtown is gone, but the railroad could still operate into the former LVRR station. Service into the Lehigh Valley would probably be easier (and cheaper) done by running via the LVRR through Easton and Bethlehem; the Lehigh Line is diverted onto the CNJ via Phillipsburg, but back onto the LVRR in Alpha. Re-extending the RVL via the CNJ through Glen Gardner, Hampton and Bloomsbury to connect with the Lehigh Line might be feasible, but the route via the former LVRR from Hunter into the Lehigh Valley is already intact and continuous. |
