You gotta remember that back in those days, MEN ran the railroad many times by the seat of their pants....there were no radios....managers and supervisors weren't crawling all over the place. North Shore trains on the "L" were motored and conductored....I like that.....by North Shore men. In the later years, there was a period when CTA crews took over at Howard ST for the run to downtown. I know this because I heard a story from one of the first Black CTA motorman who related how the arriving North Shore motorman refused to hand over the controls of his southbound Electroliner. The supervisor and manager had to physically intervene.

But back to the story. Day in and day out, the interurbans went "over the top" and never through the subway. So there was probably no need to train and qualify North Shore people about the subway. There was probably a clearance test done on some day, but witnesses to that are probably all deceased by now.
