Yes, at that time, all of the 2200s were assigned to the Blue line and were entrained in any order along with 2600s. You could have solid 8 cars, mixes of 6 and 2 or 4 and 4. Then the decision was made to have a 2600 pair at either end of an eight car train with either 2 pairs of 2200s in the middle or 2 more pairs of 2600s or a pair of each in the middle. The middle cars were called "belly cars." Other belly cars were assigned as such because their cab signal was bad order. They would have a tag on the grab iron informing switchmen not to have this cab on the end of a train. When four car trains are run, there are two combinations: all 2600s or a pair of 2200 and 2600s. Essentially four car trains are half of an eight car train and therefore there could be no solid 2200 four car trains. When the Pink line was created, all the 2200s migrated to the Blue. Before the Pink, eight car Blue line trains rattled almost empty on the Douglas branch, so the Pink line creation led to better car usage. Moving all the 2200s to the Blue eliminated repairs and parts being kept at 54th AV Terminal. The CTA has always led in creative thinking!!
