No, R1/9's are not overrated.People want to ride a NOSTALGIA train for these things. That means they want something completely unlike any of the equipment today. For them that means rattan seats, paddle fans, and DC incandescents. These trips are not run strictly for railfans, they are run for the general public. Fact of the matter is when it comes to running these trains, the TOMC are too "familiar" to most of the public to be the sort of cool culture shock that a nostalgia train should be. Can it be for some? Probably. But most people aren't going to get too excited for cars that are very similar in terms of passenger environment as some of the older equipment still running today. If you don't like it, there is always the option to not go. As apparent from the 400+ posts in this thread, there are plenty of people already interested in these trips and the vast majority who wind up going don't even post here. |
