Out of curiosity, was Lawrence St station always untiled? What's the story behind that?

The story behind that is that it was an "afterthought" station. It was built by the BMT at a later date, after the line was already running. They decided they needed a station there, and built it in the middle of the subway tunnel.

The only other afterthought station that I know of is 23rd St-Ely Ave on the IND. That's another station built after the line was already running. that's also why the tiles don't fit in with the IND color scheme. In my opinion, it's one of the most attractive IND stations in the system. The color scheme is great, and the tilework in excellent condition. Some difference between the4 two afterthought stations....Lawrence St is one of the worst stations, if not the worst in the system, and 23rd St-Ely is one of the nicest IND stations, in my opinion.
