'You could take it a step further here and have the turnstiles "validate" the ticket by printing something on it'That happens on many continental European systems, Holland and Germany for example - you buy a ticket from a booth or a machine, but you have to 'clunk' it in a validator machine either on the platform or on the vehicle, which stamps the time and date on it. If a ticket inspector boards and you have not validated your ticket, you face a fine. With smart-card systems like London's Oyster, no printing on the ticket is necessary - the roving inspectors carry portable Oyster readers which can detect where and when you have used your card |
