Again the problem with Essex Street is that the middle track, the track that would be used for trains to reverse direction, are NOW currently occupied by trains traveling across the Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn and Queens. Translation - it is not a good idea to reverse trains on a track where at the same time there are in-coming through trains.

Either the Chambers Street station would have to be used for the peak direction only trains, or those trains are sent across the Williamsburg Bridge to be dealt with at Eastern Parkway, or Metropolitan Avenue. The Essex Street station would not be a good place to terminate and relay those peak direction only trains, while at the same time, merging and separating the M/V trains, the station only has three tracks.

One at Essex Street is used for all downtown Manhattan bound trains. The middle track is NOW currently used for all J and M trains bound to Queens. At present I do not believe that there are switches to move these trains to the outer uptown side track. The uptown side track is not used, but would be used for the Williamsburg Bridge bound M/V trains. See the track map.
