Gaius Julius Caesar: praenomen, nomen, and cognomen.Gaius Octavius (better know as Augustus) was adopted by C. Julius Caesar in his will and made his heir. The Senate finally recognized him as Caesar's adopted son under the name of Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. Leaving out much; if interested, consult the OCD or a good history of the late Roman Republic/early Roman Empire. In 27 B.C. Octavian received the title of Augustus from the Senate. Hence Caesar Augustus. |
