Speaking of the High Line, I only just became aware that it was electrified. They reissued Joel Sternfeld's "Walking the High Line", which contains photos of the High Line in its overgrown days, after it was abandoned. He took the photos over a 2 year period around 2000. There are also photos of the High Line in its operating years as well as shots and info about its conversion into an elevated park.Anyway, I was surprised to see some shots with a third rail. Although in the final years, they used diesel equipment. I remember working midnights in a Railway Express garage on 21st between 10th & 11th Aves and hearing the loud groaning sound of cars going by in the middle of the night. Strangely, I never actually saw one of the trains or even looked for one. I also worked one summer in the 1960's at Railway Express's West Side Terminal, which was one of their major package sorting terminals. The LIRR yards in the 30's between 10th & 11th was the side of the terminal. When I worked midnites there, we would unload freight cars onto the platform. |
