Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Wed Nov 18 20:22:15 2009 ...the Railroads broke the country up into time zones. Before that time, the railroads had a hell of a time, as the time was different sometimes from town to town going across the country. This required many different schedules for different towns, even on the same line. The Federal Government didn't address this problem, so the railroads, then private entities, took it upon themselves to finally address the problem, and it began on Nov 18, 1883.... A year later the International Meridian Conference in Washington agreed to institute a system based on what the railroads did a year earlier.... ...and it all began, 126 years ago today.... http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/nov18.html |
