As Mr. Saitta said the line was built as a complete standalone. However, it will definitely be extended under the ST2 funding package. The ST2 package also contains funds to begin preliminary engineering and ROW acquisition from the planned southern terminus of the Central Link at Redondo/Star Lake in Federal Way to Tacoma. Starting in December the Central Link will terminate at SeaTac Airport, but the ST2 package will fund the 3 station extension to Federal Way, to open likely after 2023. Thus it is unlikely we'll see interurban service between Seattle and Tacoma before 2030.

It also remains to be seen if the Central Link extension will utilize the Tacoma Link track, if it will terminate at the Tacoma Dome, or if it will take its own route into or past Tacoma. Thus even with the Central Link interurban operating into Tacoma the first Link line may remain independent of that operation.

Even if the Tacoma Link is not subsumed into the Central Link, it is possible the Tacoma Streetcar group may integrate it into their fairly ambitious plan to restore a dense streetcar system to their city.
