Originally being from Munich, I've always wondered about the (strange, to me) NYC habit of always naming stations after the crossing street, respective avenue.

Why not name a station after the area it is located in, after well-known buildings or institutions, where possible?

E.g., Smith-9th Streets could simply be named "Gowanus"; 7th Ave further down the Crosstown Line could simply be named "Park Slope", Jay St-Borough Hall could be a simple "Borough Hall", etc.pp.

For me as a regular visitor to NYC, it's just way too much about numbers. Numbers that are often enough nothing more than repeating or confusing. E.g. on the IND QB line, what's it with 36th Street, then 63rd Drive, then 71st Avenue? Would there also be a 71st Drive or a 63rd Street, and if so, where? Get rid of all these numbers and cross street names and simply call the stations "Rego Park" or "Forest Hills"!
