They are only turned completely off when they need servicing, which for a DE/DM could mean 3-4 times a week. Still, it's probably too costly in manpower to do every day and risky to boot. However, I see that the next generation of diesel electric locomotives will have to address this issue and have some sort of reliable wayside power option. |
