I had assumed the stainless skin peices were shot welded to each other, but did not know how they were attached to the underbody or chassis. If they are welded, this may ideed be the week pointReferences seem to suggest the Budd cars (R-32s) had stainless frames (all stainless) while the St. Louis cars (R-38, R-40 and R-42) had carbon steel. If so, it may be interesting to see if there is a difference in failure modes. |
