Also, although the plaintiff may end up settling the suit for a much smaller amount than demanded, one of the main reasons for large monetary settlements is to severely punish the miscreants with more that just a slap on the wrist. The idea is to give a swift sure and severe kick in the butt that will not soon be forgotten. I would also like to add that in a similar position, I would also make, as part of such a lawsuit, a demand that the offending officer or officers be terminated from the PD and be denied the right to become any type of law enforcement officer or even a security guard for at least a significant period of time if not permanently. |
