Michael Jackson would have been familiar with Hoyt-Schermerhorn before, because he was in the 1978 movie adaption of "The Wiz" as the Scarecrow. He and the other cast members (including Diana Ross and the late Nipsey Russell) filmed most of the subway-related scenes at that station, including on the closed "HH" shuttle platform that had yellow lineoleum tiles installed there to make it look like as the Yellow Brick Road.

I have a few of those "tiles" that I was able to salvaged from the garbage there in the fall of 1977, when the movie was filmed at Hoyt-Schermerhorn. The movie also shot some scenes at the BMT Union Square complex with all those passageway ramps there, as I recall.
