Railroad Magazine at one time had a railroad camera club and advised members to carry their membership card when out photographing. This became a necessity during WWII.After the war ended, the "Golden Age of Railfanning" began. Wartime restrictions on photography ended, and most railroads and trolley companies welcomed fantrips as a source of revenue. Some railroads even had a special department just for railfan charters, and would go to great lengths to accommodate fans. As the 1970s progressed, railfans and fantrips were regarded as a legal and operational hindrance, and the friendly attitude towards railfans began to deteriorate. Since 9-11-01, railfans and photography are looked upon as a security risk. Many transit agencies have attempted to enact unconstitutional photo bans. Through the efforts of the ACLU and certain individuals, these bans were shown to be illegal and have been lifted. However, much still remains to be accomplished, as certain agencies have not yet seen the light. |
