It wouldn't be needed, but it certainly is a lot more efficient than third rail. When the LIRR began electrifying east of Mineola, they should have been forward looking and looking to catenary for those expansions. In the long run it would have been cheaper and easier. In the interum, they could have ordered "New Haven Branch" like M3's that could operate on both catenary and third rail. They would have saved in the long run on the cost of electrification (all those substations wouldn't have been necessary), and they would have been able to expand much further and easier. They also would have saved money on the disasterous FL9 experiment, as well as the, at best, lemon DM30 purchase. |
