Were you standing near one of the grates? Those do transmit sound. If you're not next to one or not next to the entrance, no, you really don't here it. Of course the obsessive types who post here want so badly to hear it that they "hear" it anyway. They hear it from Brooklyn. The rest of us regular passengers really don't.

"I think the sound proofing was meant more to reduce the noice within the station too, not just outside of it."
