The 0600s have lasted 30 years without a major overhaul which is pretty good. They were a very conservative design electrically and mechanically. The design may have been a reaction to the problems the T had with the Boeing LRVs. Now that AC propulsion and electronic controls are proven technology, new cars make more sense than rebuilding things like cam controllers.There was an ad by GE in Railway Age many years ago. It said something like "When you rebuild a 40 year old locomotive you get a brand new 40 year old locomotive." |
