You bring up an interesting thing...were there ANY wrecks like union square, or wilyB during the old times, like when the irt wasn't even fully signalled? Excluding Malbone, which was caused by negligence on MANY levels.

I think the old railroads were rather safe, and i didn't see anything on NYCsubway.org that would imply a failure worth noting.
