So it's a zoned fare territory? Well, quickly checking out some Gold line videos surprised me, they did show some fairly long stretches between stations. Distance-wise it's similar in some cases to the LIRR station spacing. But like you said, the dense urban core is still the key. And the fact that the Babylon Branch stations stations have been in the same place mostly for a century or more is important also. I guess with the new lines they didn't have many opportunities to have stations located at the center of town. Too bad.

Still, it's a noble effort. Long range, these train lines will alter their surroundings. Think fifty years down the road. FWIW, I can imagine a great cartoon made from the trains point of view, the seemingly new guy cautiously making his way through the totally automobile-centric landscape. Something like CARS but using trains instead as the characters.
