It was an insulation failure in a relay which has both600V and 32V circuits running through it. The failure was most likely caused by age/hours of run time on the coil. The location of the failure was such that it only created a short circuit when gravity was on its side, i.e. when the car was pointing uphill in one direction (say towards the #1 end.. I really don't remember which way). This condition, in combination with a reverser that had somewhat leaky cups and needed more lube, created a "one in a million" condition which allowed the reverser to set up in the wrong direction, AND completed the interlock which allowed the line switch to pick up and the group to run up. |
