The Witts did get pans in the 1970s, but not for the reason stated. It was a plan to eliminate conductors that led to conversion to pantogragh.As for getting rid of the Witts, the Sirio were supposed to do that. But the Sirio are so unreliable and the Witts so reliable, that they will soldier on for probably 10 more years. They're truly a Milanese icon. And rapidly becoming a San Francisco icon, as well.
