BMT became "public domain" in around 1943 when the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Co. dissolved (3 years after the lines were taken over by the City).While it was (and sometimes still is) used by the various agencies that ran the subways over the years to identify the divisions it no longer represents a legal entity (same goes for IRT and IND). |
