Regular "two way" radios are more practical and easier to use. Instead of Mr. Chino calling the ticket collector, who in turn, had to notify the engineer, if Mr. Chino had a radio all he had to do was use it to tell the engineer himself.

However, if the LIRR finds it too costly to provide every trainman with a radio, then the phones are the next best thing. At NJ Transit, some trainmen have radios while everyone has Nextel phones.
