The station opened July 1, 1968 as an extension of the 6 Avenue mainline.It is one of my favorite postwar IND stations and still looks great four decades later with its "streamline moderne" design. Compared the the 1988 Archer line, 57 Street is functional and smooth. The location is great too, being in northern Midtown and one block from Carnegie Hall.
