Pull out of the library (net) any book on any major railroad from the past. This conutry was well served/covered with all kinds of route. Cars killed it all. Heck, the Lehigh Valley RR was a regional road, connected to NYC, and allowed connections anywhere in the continental U.S.. They were the line that delivered all the Bethlehem Steel that built the Empire State Building, among many others.
