High speed rail is worthwhile but should not be a priority. Putting the other major issues aside, what is the motivation for any politican to suddenly embrace something as banal as transit? It hasn't been noticed for years by any administartion since the last highways were built nationwide. All other state funded projects do not count here. The Fed. has to do something about fuel consupmtion and mass-transit is a most imoprtatnt solution. Up until now, it's been side-stepped. Weaning people (away from and off of) who live with cars daily will not be easy, although as fuel prices go up I'm sure they will at least listen to alternatives. I don't see a nation of hybrid and electric car drivers. They can't build enough of them and they can't bring the cost down. Existing mass-transit can be expanded to to this. It's all dependant on comittment. In this area, they are converting defunct rail lines into bicycle paths! SEPTA has lines all over the place that are just sitting there. NYC has had many opportunities to add to the existing/best system in the world. Money! That's all it takes, and believe it it's out there it just needs to be re-directed. Any rail system that can breach and cross the New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania areas will only add possibilities of growing the economy, connecting areas that could be considered as one, and save millions in fuel expenses. Built parking areas, fire up some kind, any kind of train, and carry the people. It's so obvious that it's a crime not to be addressed.
