Rapid acceleration beyond 3 mph/s is mnot wanted by the public because it is uncomfortable when you have to stand.


I think it has more to do with the jerk - the rate of change of acceleration with respect to time, or the third derivative with respect to time of the position-time function.

Some train operators on older trains - especially R40/42 sets, which have good acceleration out of a stop to begin with up to at least 10 mph at least - create a lot of jerk by pulling back the controller all the way before the train has even closed up the doors, and the brakes are already released - a lot of faith to put into the door circuits, I guess - which makes it an uncomfortable, and probably unsafe, start.
