If I recall correctly, "cretin" used to be used by doctors to refer to patients who were mentally retarded, "slow," due to a thyroid deficiency.That's part of the etymology, more or less, in that it was used to refer to the mentally retarded, but coming before even THAT, it was derived from the term 'christian'. |
