Well, I know that one of R-7A #1575's bulkhead does contain a BMT terminal destination roll sign box, and that could be switched with one other R-1/9 in exchange. When in 2004, and during the time when #1575 was the south motor of a consist while in service on the BMT Broadway Line (between 57th Street-7th Avenue and Whitehall Street), it switched sign boxes so that it had a "Whitehall Street" reading on the front.

Here is the proof...

Oh, that's me in front of the storm door window on the left side of the photo. The side signs would be probably be set as "Special" for the northern terminal only at best.
