Actually, the 14 St Line or "LL" as it was called in 1969 was the first Eastern division Line to get air conditioned cars. Due to a delay in releasing sufficient R-42s for promised introduction of air conditioned cars on the 14 St Line, 3 6 car trains of modified R-40s were assigned to the 14 St Line and fitted with the appropriate Eastern Division roll signs. Due to a crew office mixup when I was a M/M in 1969, I ended up being assigned to an early AM run out of canarsie on Friday, June 20 of that year. I was the M/M on the 5:11AM interval out of Canarsie which was a 6 car train of air conditioned R-40Ms and when I blew the horn for the grade crossing at E 105 St, all the passengers in my car applauded. Not only did I operate the first air conditioned train on the 14 St Line but during the following week that I held down that run, I also operated the last train of steels on the line.
