Landfill which created the "flats" and the Gateway National Preserve. The physical landscape would not look anything like it does in that picture.The scary thing to remember is if we get hit directly with a category 1 hurricane, all of that man-made land will disappear and with the Rockaway line now severed from the LIRR thru Valley Stream, Rockaway could become completely isolated. |
