Never would have thought of that one, good call Jersey Mike. Yes, those pneumatic machines had a sound and rhythm all their own..sort of a "sching SHINK...shhhhhhhhhh." One of the main compressors in the State ST subway was at Roosevelt RD station and the backup in the Armitage AV tower. A pipe ran the length of the subway. I remember a signal maintainer remarking that if the compressor at Armitage kicked in, it meant a telephone call would soon follow. All that was ripped out a few years ago when the signalling in the subway was modernized and converted from wayside to cab signal.Here's one of those track trips that Jersey doesn't like. It's protecting Track 1 reverse moves into the Belmont station. David Harrison |
