Except that to place third rail you need transmission wires from the AC substation to the DC substation. I would imagine that in more than a few places there wouldn't be enough room to place the transmission lines with the same setback from the ROW which the LIRR did in the 1920s. Thus you'd probably have the transmission lines placed over one or both of the tracks with a structure similar to a taller catenary support tower. |
