Tried that sometime ago before the R62 purchase..

The plan was to see if an 65ft car could work in the A Division.

Two R12s were used,I believe..and there Were problems but not like you think.
It was discovered that a 60-65 ft car COULD operate in the A Division..with a few modification to the 14th st Union Square platforms ,South ferry..and a few key locations around the system...

But the COST to retrofit the A division was a problem the MTA did Not want to deal with[sort of what they went thur to pave the way for the R44's and future 75ft B Division cars]..

So,with that in mind..the scrapped the whole program..and purchased the R62/62A as "regular" 51fters...

The problem with the 7 line is the Steinway Tunnels.[built for street cars, taken over by the Interboro Subway..used as a subway tunnel]
The Subway portion is built to DUAL CONTRACT size[After Grand Central,BEFORE THE STEINWAY TUBES,and the ENTIRE ELEVATED LINE to the Main st subway station.]

It would cost too much to refit the line for BMTIND lines..reroute the Manhattan line to somewhere else.

It better to just leave things the way they are,or extend the platforms slightly to add another car to the sets.
