Once again, I've got no argument with anything you've said here. It is all correct. However, my original point was that the TA was worried about a train being hijacked as a result of this movie, and I still believe that is the case. And yes, they wanted to protect themselves legally, in case someone did try. They did render technical assistance, as you also point out, which makes the disclaimer untrue.

I think the credits could have been more accurately worded as follows: We thank the New York City Transit Authority for allowing parts of the film to be made on their property and for the equipment they provided. However they did not provide technical assistance...

The credits as written provide a disservice to the TA by making it seem as if it was made against their will and without them supervising any of the action. We will never see another movie like the original Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, or negative closing credits again.
