That's an important point, and Americans do seem to be more willing to contemplate very long drives than Europeans are.

With one exception: I know plenty of people who will drive 800+ miles in a day to get back to England from doing a tour of caves cooperatives in the south of France. I do think they're all slightly bonkers though.
