Given the spread of most of the US cities you list out of the downtowns and out to their suburban areas, the HSR trips will frequently require significant transportation (i.e. not a short cab or subway/light rail/bus ride) to and from the stations at each end of the trip whereas auto travel will be point to point.Had HSR been in place even 25 years ago, this might not have been the case. And for precisely this reason, HSR should be based on city populations (and to a lesser extent densities), not metro ones. HSR is good for cities, but less good for sprawl. |
