Selkirk, my main squeeze was initially mystified by my hobby but the first morning I put her in the cab of a live steam engine I couldn’t get her out for the rest of the day! I can walk up towards a standing engine and tell from 2 car lengths if it is live or not, I imagine you are like that with the subtle breathing of transit equipment. So yes motion counts.

About basic skills, my house contractor threw out extension cords because nobody could replace the bent plug on the end. At the office a co worker took a strip off a friend who had discarded (trash!) a borrowed vacuum cleaner because the plug was broken. You are right on the mark about the changing times, my father taught me the colours of hot and neutral before I was 10, that doesn’t happen now (and he wasn’t an electrician).
