Pre-Interstate days, you were bombarded by commercial advertising signs every couple of hundred feet on many roads. The Parkways were free of those signs. I was reminded of how bad the advertising once was while driving in the US when I took a cab from Giza to the Suez Canal in 1985. Although the only sight was sand on both sides of the road, we must have passed at least 300 billboards for Coca-Cola and as well as signs for a half dozen other advertisers. |
