Jacobs was not the first person to stand up to Moses, but she was probably the first one to successfully do it. As much as we should praise her and Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis for ending the era of "tear it down, no matter what", we seem to now have gone to the other extreme. If an ordinary Bronx housing project can claim landmark status as the "birth of hip-hop", then we've lost our collective minds.Oh, I totally agree. But the "let's landmark absolutely everything" strategy is quite a good one against the Moses-style abuse of power. There must be some way of restoring popular trust in public policy, but I sure don't know what it is. |
