A good picture of this is Report From Engine Company 82 by Dennis Smith. Good observations of the South Bronx by the retired NYFD Firefighter when he worked at the Intervale Avenue station in the late 60's and early 70's. Happily, this small but excellent book was reissued and is sometimes seen with Report From Ground Zero by the same author. It does for the fire department what Chief by Albert Seedman (Retired NYPD Chief Of Detectives) did for the police department when it was copyright 1974 - shows what it really is like. |
