Yes it sucks for railfans but if it prevents a terrorist attack then it's worth it.

That's a mighty big "if," there! :)

Yennyway, banning photography does absolutely nothing to prevent terrorist attacks. The general speculation is that transit systems ban photography because they don't want dirty or poorly-maintained parts of their systems photographed and published for all to see; terrorism is just a handy excuse nowadays, since the terrorists have succeeded in making us terrified and thus willing to do anything if we're told it'll make us safer.

Of course, there are places where terrorist attacks on transit systems are actually very real possibilities. For example, Israel is always on the alert for terrorism, but according to SubChatters who have been there, they don't have any photo bans. Spain has had a couple attacks on their transit systems, yet a couple of cops on the Barcelona metro actually stopped to let me take a picture before walking past my camera.

See, if you have to prepare for real terrorist attacks, you have to know exactly what to look for. Since we're not really at risk, we can afford to waste resources with ridiculous "security theater" like photo bans and "random bag searches."

"If you see something, say something... and no matter what it is, we'll shut down the entire line you saw it on!"
CHIRP!
