If any of you are really fascinated by abandoned tunnels, just enter "Cincinatti subway" in your address bar and you will come across a number of websites related to the almost completed Cincinatti, Ohio subway system. The subway is complete except for tracks and station finish and was originally planned to bring the southern Ohio interurbans into the downtown section of the city. Unfortunately, by the time the tunnels were completed, many of the interurbans it was designed to serve had either bustituted or gone out of business entirely and the city did not want to proceed with the alternate plan of running its own subway trains through the tunnels. In the 1950s, some of the stations were used as fallout shelters and later, a water main was laid along the entire length of one of the trackways the subway. The site I looked at had many good photos both of the construction and also of what the system looks like these days. You would think that with the light rail boom in this country that the city of Cincinatti would take aevantage of an almost complete infrastructure and establish a light rail system in its city.
