Horace Harding Boulevard pre-dated the LIE so they would not have been on local streets but on a surface parkway that probably would have been widened to three lanes each way, had Moses not built the LIE.The LIE is a NECESSARY road. It's the ONLY limited access expressway that cuts across Long Island. There is no way Jericho Turnpike and Sunrise Highway could have absorbed all the traffic that the LIE carries. We may curse it at rush hours, but it's a necessary evil, just as the BQE/Gowanas is. |
