How do you know that we'll never know? There's always a chance that more information could become known in the future.


Not in the near future.

Ground Penetrating Radar anyone? Maybe somebody could go beg NASA or the NRO to task a Shuttle Topography Mission (IIRC there's still a few more of those to do), or a LaCrosse satellite to take us some ISAR pics of the area, down to a depth of 10 meters or so. If an STM mission can see aquifers 100 feet under the Nile River it should be able to spot the difference in loose aggregate and the natural soil under Liberty Ave at less than 25 feet under the street.
