AT&T (formerly Cingular) will be the major carrier of this phone (because AT&T uses GSM/EDGE, while Verizon and Sprint share the CDMA network.)The screen resolution is impressive, most phones have QVGA (320 X 240 pixels) screens. EDGE is very slow, compared to the new higher speed HSDPA network. It's a shame that Apple should have waited until HSDPA rolls out because now Verizon and Sprint are set to upgrade their networks to the newer EV-DO, Revision A standard. For those of you keeping score, Sprint/Verizon currently use EV-DO Revision 0, which is approx 700 kbps. download (up to 2 Mbps.) and 75 kbps. upload. Ev-DO Rev. A improves upload speeds to 700 kbps. while download speeds gets a very minor uptick to 800 kbps. But as Apple rolls out the iphone, Verizon and Sprint are set to debut EV-DO Rev. A which will allow video calling, yes one can talk to another on a video screen. As if that is not enough for tech geeks, Sprint is in the process of upgrading their network to a new Wi-Fi standard, called Wi-Max, that will be essentially be the same as Wi-Fi for laptops, but more applicable to mobile phones. I will admit that Apple has raised the bar in video/audio but they will have to play catch up with the new networks and upgrades. |
