Most people these days pronounce it as four syllables, stressed on the first. But Sissister and Sissiter are also the same place.It's effectively the odd one out as it's the one that's generally pronounced intuitively. Of course, -cesters aren't the only tricky placenames. I got a DVD for Christmas, narrated by an American, including the stretch of the East Coast Main Line from Burr Wick to Edinburrow. |
